2011:

Top 10 Albums:

1. Father, Son, Holy Ghost- Girls

’60s rock’n'roll, San Franciscan style; earnest, melodic and beautiful. Girls brings the sun and the shade on their amazing second full-length record.

2. Portamento- The Drums

New-new wave pop, inspired by heartbreak, ’80s goth synths and the art of making catchy melodies. Its honesty is exposed through melancholy lyrics and vivid imagery.

3. Yuck- Yuck

If Sonic Youth decided not to suck and make pure noise, they would sound like Yuck. Grungy, angsty, pretty. Yuck does not suck, and they’re far from it.

4. The Year of Hibernation- Youth Lagoon (note: will be at The Jackpot on March 12)

Echoic, climactic, Boise’s Youth Lagoon seems to approach songs as if each one were a three-minute composition, and the results is sheer beauty; echoic, climactic, awesome.

5.What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?- The Vaccines

Loud, boisterous, surf-tinged, reverb-drenched indie rock from Britain’s most popular new rock act since the Arctic Monkeys. The Vaccines uses punk rock simplicity with soaring vocals to produce a marvelous result.

6. Suck It And See- Arctic Monkeys

Britain’s golden boys follow up ’09′s dark, drudging, romantic LP with their sunniest, rocking album yet, sticking the landing. From their provocative album title to their beautifully distorted Fenders, the Arctics craft their best record since their debut.

7. Cults- Cults (note: will be at Granada on April 14)

World, meet Cults. Immaculately modernizing ’60s girl-group doo-wop, their debut album is flawless in its ability to make listeners dance, bop, jump around and sing along to. “Cults” is the best sparkling, shimmering doo-wop-sounding record since, well, the ’60s.

8. Days- Real Estate

Leading listeners on a journey through shady lanes, lush meadows and childhood memories, Real Estate creates music gold, striking a vein rich with nostalgic lyrics, swooping guitars, smooth-sailing rhythms and lovely melodies.

9. Go With Me- Seapony

Jangly, arpeggiated guitars blanketed over soft, crooning vocals creates Seapony’s dreamy, wavy debut album, dishing out song after song of pure, Morrissey-influenced joy.

10. Idle Labor- Craft Spells

’80s goth/new wave revivalists Craft Spells channel their inner Cure on their lavishly dark and angsty record, complete with Smiths guitar twang and haunting drums and synths.

Artists to Look Out For:

Dog Is Dead (single “Hands Down” out now)

Supporting acts like OK Go, Cajun Dance Party and Bombay Bicycle Club, this jangly indie-pop five-piece has developed ample buzz and created a dedicated fan base, even earning them a musical appearance on the highly-popular British television “Skins.” The fun, danceable, teen-angsty English band makes high-quality pop music that sonically soothes the ears, creating a groovy dance party inside listeners’ heads — which is actually what causes people to bop their heads around. Their sound resembles the likes of The Wombats, Bombay Bicycle Club, and The Maccabees, yet hints at ska and jazz with syncopated beats and saxophone serenades. Dog Is Dead stands on the brink of becoming big in the indie-music world; picture them as the next Wombats or Arctic Monkeys.

<del> </del>

Howler (debut album “American Give Up” is due on Jan. 17)

Ambitious, taunting, daring and ever-so cool, Howler’s debut album is one for the record books — that is, if record books measured how awesomely wicked indie guitar bands sound. For all intensive purposes, let’s assume that’s how record books work: Howler would own every single page in said book. The Minneapolis natives have garnished incredibly high praise from British music sources like BBC, NME, and The Guardian, and the acclaim is bound to keep coming. With every song being three minutes or less, Howler holds a healthy musical prowess for loud, lovely, well-crafted pop/racket. (Or maybe it should be called ROCKet). Bands of the early ‘00s such as The Strokes and The Libertines would be proud to see the torch of dirty garage-rock still burning strong and being passed on, especially since Howler sounds so similar to the aforementioned groups. “America Give Up” is gritty, fuzzy, vintage and everything one looks for in a rocking indie album.

<del> </del>

Dry the River (debut album “Shallow Bed” out on Feb. 27)

After Mumford and Sons took America (and the entire world) by storm, it was clear that similar folky, down-to-earth, Americana roots bands would rise above the fog of the indie underground. Although Dry the River is still ranked at a hipster-level indie, expect them to become much bigger, especially in Britain. Dry the River’s tunes carry themselves with a delicate grace–apparent in the fragile lyrics– but also with a gritty, no-holds-barred, powerful instrumentation–presented with tightly-distorted guitars and unabashed drumming. Although they have obvious influences– Fleet Foxes being one– Dry the River stands on their own with their more percussive sound and broader, louder choruses. Dry the River is the next big folk group.

From rompers to Sperrys to feathers on earrings and fringe boots, 2011 was a year of change and experimentation in fashion. Students have mixed opinions as far as to what they specifically liked and disliked.

“Sperrys were overpriced and everywhere,” senior Holly Johnston said. “They are ugly and look like safari shoes.”

Sperrys are usually tan, sturdy shoes, popularly worn by college and high school students, despite being pricey-usually around $70.

“I didn’t dig the girls who wore leggings as pants,” sophomore Eva Upman said.

“Either the lace or the feather [trends] were the best,” senior Evelyn Mandell said. “Maxi dresses were in too. Rompers don’t work on everybody.”

As “Vogue Magazine” puts it, minimalism and the vintage look were especially popular this year.

“Vintage sweaters and light cardigans were popular [among guys] this year,” junior Liam Inbody said. “I love flannels. They’re very comfortable and warm. I can wear them with whatever. There isn’t just one pair of jeans you have to wear them with.”

Minimalism in fashion means plain colored dresses and tops; sleek clothing, but simple. Pair a simple outfit with a long necklace or a belt, and this was considered “in.” For others, bright neon colors, animal prints, floral patterns and lace were more their 2011 style.

“As long as you don’t overdo [the lace], I really like it,” Johnston said.

A simple plaid or flannel shirt was the safe way to be fashionably “in” this year. But with experimenting through fashion comes self-expression. Dyed hair, and the edgy “punk” look of studs on accessories, clothing and combat boots raged.

“It is really exciting that the shorts, tights and boots combo that was popular in the ‘80s is coming back into fashion,” senior Hannah Stevens said. “If you go on Look Book, at least one girl will have a picture like that.”

“[Overall], I felt a rejection of pants this year,” Johnston said. “I started wearing more dresses and rompers.”

With a new year will come new fashion and trends. What will become of the patterned tights, feathers and lace will only be able to be told in time.

The new year has made its entrance, and the fashion reports are in. Neon colors and animal prints have been booted away, replaced by hats, neutral colors and flower prints.

According to the January 2012 issue of “Real Simple,” slippers are destined to be in this year. They aren’t the old house slippers that people wear around the house and the occasional trip to the grocery store, but more of a leather slipper that resembles some kind of dress shoe.

Accessories might be the highlight to a neutral-colored outfit, and there are many different options to decide between. One of these might be a decorated hair elastic, to replace the plain black elastic on girls’ wrists used for occasional hair emergencies.

Hair salons might be busy this year giving haircuts because short fringe hair and bangs are making a comeback. According to the 2012 hairstyles on fashionising.com, there are plenty of different styles for those with short hair.

But if short hair is not an option for some, then the style for those long locks is curls. Not necessarily the perfect, symmetrical curls that one might spend hours creating. These curls would be more like the soft, bouncy curls that are more laid-back.

This year, the guys will be experimenting with a new color. Rust is predicted to be a popular color: rust-colored shoes and jeans according to “Esquire.”

Along with rust, guys will also have the same earthy, neutral tones in their clothing that girls will be incorporating this year. The average pair of jeans will still be in, but there will be more colors to choose from.

The new year has begun and these new fashions will come and go. Only time will show what becomes of them.

2012:
ARTISTS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

1. Azealia Banks (debut album due early 2012)
Although she has already complained about being called the next Nicki Minaj, that would be the best way to describe Azealia Banks. The Harlem native made her rap debut after giving up her unsuccessful acting career. Banks appeared on numerous year-end lists (including my own) after the release of her breakthrough single “212.” Currently living in London, Banks is working on her debut album, due sometime early this year. This album is highly anticipated as Banks currently has only a few songs to her name. Even Kanye West has high hopes for this young rapper as she is one of only five people he follows on Twitter.

2. Lana Del Rey (debut album “Born to Die” due Jan. 31)
It appears that all it takes to make it these days is around five minutes of YouTube fame. Well, 4:49 to be exact. That is the length of Lana Del Rey’s breakthrough single “Video Games” which currently has over 20 million views after being uploaded five months ago. Although that number may seem very standard in comparison with the likes of Weezy or Gaga, Del Rey deserves credit for this one as she literally came out of nowhere. The hype surrounding Lana Del Rey started in August and hasn’t ended yet. First there was confusion, then obsession, now anticipation for her debut album which will be released at the end of this month. For those who haven’t seen the “Video Games” video, or missed her SNL performance, ignore the fact that Brian Williams dissed her and give her a listen.

3. Kendrick Lamar (note: Kendrick Lamar is performing with Drake at the Sprint Center on March 1)
There are those who argue that Kendrick Lamar was one of the best new rappers from 2011. I am one of those people. If I knew how to classify Lamar’s album/mixtape/whatever-it-is “Section.80” it would definitely be somewhere on my list. Lamar is just one of those artists that you can tell is bound for big things. Along with being asked to open for Drake on his “Club Paradise” tour, Lamar also grabbed the attention of rap legend Dr. Dre. He released a promotional song and video for Dre’s highly anticipated album “Detox” early last year. Lamar is set to release what he calls his debut album “Good Kid in a Bad City” sometime this year.

Men’s fashion. When I was first asked to write about this, I honestly did not know where to begin. How do I write an article about a pair of jeans and a t-shirt?

I decided the best way to find out about men’s clothing was to head to the manliest place I could go without being thrown out: the barbershop. From my own observations and a few conversations with guys waiting for their haircuts, I have theorized that there are three categories of men’s style- hipsters, jocks and the guys who wear whatever looks or smells decently clean.

I know that the men reading this probably resent that type of categorization but in the back of your masculine minds you are probably wondering how we women know that the shirt you are wearing was picked up off of the bedroom floor this morning.

Trust me when I say that it isn’t that hard to tell, especially when you walk in wearing your wrinkled white t-shirt from a Hanes three-pack and tattered jeans. Another giveaway is that bedhead hairdo, when you look like you slept late; it’s obvious that you grabbed the first thing you could lay your hands on.

I must exempt hipsters from this sort of behavior. While most men are struggling to find a decent shirt to wear, you have already prepared a fashion forward outfit complete with cashmere sweater, scarf and gorgeous watch.

For a while, we females were amazed and shocked. You gave away the big secret: Men can wear tailored clothes without coercion or blackmail. But sometime after you started wearing t-shirts with bands that no one knows about, you lost us.

Let’s be honest: no woman wants to be seen with a guy who looks more fashionable or intelligent than her, so hold off on the corduroys and cardigans and kick back in that pair of sweats and that wrinkled white Hanes t-shirt every once in a while.

While the hipsters need to relax a little, you athletic guys need to dress up more often. It is an unfortunate truth that the only time you do not wear an Under Amour, Nike or Adidas product is when you are actually required to be well dressed in honor of game day.

It is on these formal dress-up days that we ladies take notice. I have never met a woman who did not appreciate a pair of nice slacks and button down shirt on a guy. In my opinion, that is the most attractive outfit a man can wear. Pair that with a spritz of cologne, as long as it is not Axe, and you will have our attention in no time.

I suppose the best advice I can give to you men is just to find balance in your choices. Wear sweats on lazy days and dress nicely on others; a little variety never hurt anyone. Lastly, just be yourself-as long as you smell nice.

Dutch Newman @ The Bottleneck Dec. 28
Deriving his name from a 1930s song writer, Dutch Newman is guaranteed to bring classic lyricism. Newman’s resume includes working with local greats such as Tech N9ne and Stik Figa and opening for hip-hop classic Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. He is a local favorite and is largely respected amongst many other musicians.
His most recent project, The Lonely Hearts Club, featuring local vocalist Johny Quest, recently released its sophomore studio EP entitled “Skinny Jeans for Fat People.” The EP contains 10 tracks set to provoke, inspire and entertain. The EP is a wild adventure through the passions and pitfalls of the young MC laced with lush melodies provided by Johnny Quest.
Whether he is wrecking an open mic session or free-styling outside of The Granada, Dutch Newman continues to be one of the the hungriest Kansas City MCs. He strives to please his audience with real music while also telling a story. His work ethic and talent continue to bring Newman closer to fame while still producing pleasing music.
Tickets are $3 and are available at The Bottleneck. Having seen Dutch Newman live, I can guarantee that he is loads of fun to watch. Often times he runs offstage into the audience, enhancing the already captivating music being performed. This concert is sure to impress any hip-hop-head exploring local talent.
Quiet Corral @ The Bottleneck Jan. 21
With haunting harmonies and smooth sounds, Lawrence’s Quiet Corral continues to establish itself as one of this city’s top musical acts. Quiet Corral is comprised of six Lawrence residents — two of whom are Isaac Flynn and Matt Green who were previously in punk-pop group Lawrence Letterday. Quiet Corral combines both indie-pop and folk elements, greatly departing from Flynn and Green’s pervious musical project. With four-part harmonies, electric and acoustic guitars and intricate percussive beats, Quiet Corral creates a new listening experience for their audience.
Quiet Corral released their first self-titled studio EP in November 2010 and has continued to please fans with its dusty Americana feel. The EP starts with an instrumental track composed purely of a guitar harmony. The intro sets the mood for the vocal singalong to ensue. Many of the tracks would fit perfectly into the scheme of radio music containing delicate instrumentals intertwined with dense vocals. Many elements in Quiet Corral are reminiscent of greats such as U2 and recent music phenomena Foster The People.
Quiet Corral has the talent to become a remarkably popular musical number. The six-person ensemble gives the band much versatility to throw together songs using their varying musical tastes. This allows them not be tethered to a single style of music.
The high energy produced by Quiet Corral sets the cornerstone for what will unfold to be a fun concert experience. Audience members will be kept on their toes by Quiet Corral’s layered sound and exciting, lush vocals. Concert goers will be satisfied with a mix between smooth, melodic songs and upbeat, fast tunes. Ticket prices are unavailable at this time but tickets will be sold at The Bottleneck.
Take Shelter @ Liberty Hall Coming Soon
Scoring an outstanding 92 percent on movie review website Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomato Meter and an 8/10 on IMDb, “Take Shelter” is a movie greatly enjoyed by esteemed critics and movie connoisseurs alike. What may seem like just another “indie” film is becoming more and more critically acclaimed with its heartfelt message and dynamic acting delivered by a modest cast.
When a farmer from Ohio by the name of Curtis LaForche, played by Michael Shannon, begins to receive apocalyptic visions, he chooses not to tell his family but to instead build a bomb shelter. This strange behavior begins to break the bonds he had with his family. In his solitude, he begins to fear the possible reality of his dreams. As the visions continue, LaForche has to determine whether to shield his family from his visions or from himself.
“Michael Shannon gives a powerhouse performance and the purposefully subtle film-making creates a perfect blend of drama, terror, and dread,” Rotten Tomatoes says. Tom Long from the Detroit News describes “Take Shelter” as “the best drama of the year so far.” Many top critics agree that “Take Shelter” is a must-see.
Although Liberty Hall has not released the dates that this film will be showing, I would not let that deter you from keeping your eyes peeled for this film. Any movie fan will be moved by the heart-touching performances of this cast.

When we were little, the holidays were a time of magic. Daydreams of Santa, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf constantly ran through our heads.
Now that we’re older, it’s harder to get excited about the holidays. However, there is a simple and fun way to spread a little holiday cheer.
Holiday parties are a great way to get pumped for the holidays, and get together with friends and family. The great thing is, the possibilities are endless. There’s a holiday party for everyone.
Gift Exchange Parties
One of the most classic holiday parties is the Secret Santa. Secret Santa parties are a great way to break the ice and meet new people. When guests arrive, have them fill out a short questionnaire with questions like favorite color, favorite food, favorite store and hobbies. This, along with their name, will be put into a container for people to draw out of.
Each guest is to get a small gift for the person whose name they draw. Either invite guests over about a week later to exchange gifts or have them exchange gifts on their own time. Make sure to set a price limit on gifts to avoid that awkward feeling of exchanging gifts of unequal value.
Another kind of gift-exchange party is the White Elephant. At a White Elephant, guests come with an inexpensive, humorous and often tacky gift.
“My favorite kind of parties are white elephants because it’s fun to buy and see all the gag gifts people have found,” freshman Abby Cohen said. “It’s just all over a good time.”
As guests arrive, ask them to draw a number from a hat and have them sit in a circle with the presents in the middle. The numbers drawn will determine the order in which guests open gifts.
To start the game, the person with the highest number chooses a gift from the center, unwraps it and shows it to the rest of the group. The next player will then have a choice to either unwrap a gift or “steal” a gift that has already been unwrapped.
When a player has their gift stolen, they can choose a new gift from the center to unwrap. The cycle continues until the last gift has been unwrapped.
Fun You Can Taste
There’s nothing more comforting than the smell of freshly baked cookies wafting from the oven, so one party guaranteed to be a hit is a cookie-baking party.
To cut down on costs, plan out what ingredients will be needed and ask each guest to contribute. Or, bake the cookies before guests arrive and have each one bring something to decorate with.
After cookies are done, give each guest a paper plate and have them choose the cookies they want to bring home. Make sure there are enough cookies for each guest to take a platter.
Decorating gingerbread houses is another holiday favorite, so if cookies sound like too much work, that’s another option. Put guests on teams to decorate the houses, and have a competition for who creates the best house.
Low-maintenance Parties
One party guaranteed to get a laugh is the ugly sweater party. Ask guests to come in the ugliest holiday sweater they can find — the uglier, the better. Most people have an ugly sweater somewhere in their house, but if not, check any of the secondhand stores in town. This party can be combined with any of the previously mentioned parties or stand on its own.
Another simple party is a holiday movie marathon. Invite friends to come over and watch holiday favorites such as Elf, Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life.
“Make sure to watch Elf,” senior Kendra Moore said. “It’s a classic.”
Making Lawrence a Better Place — One Song at a Time
“Christmas caroling is a fun and fulfilling experience, not only for the caroler, but for the community,” sophomore David Glauner said.
Some may consider it old-fashioned, but Christmas caroling is a great way to spread some holiday spirit throughout the community. Caroling can be done anywhere — around the neighborhood, at a nursing home, or even just walking down Mass Street.
Not only is it a fun way to get together with friends, but watching people’s reactions is priceless — especially the older folks’.
Before caroling, make sure to print out lyrics to the songs. If singing in public sounds ominous, turn it into a Christmas Carol karaoke party.
The holidays are all about getting together with loved ones and celebrating what makes life great. Parties don’t have to be big productions. It’s amazing how much fun can be had with just a few people hanging out. So, pick a date, call up friends, and spread a little holiday cheer.

A zine: a small, xeroxed, do-it-yourself magazine, containing a compilation of unconventional subject matter sometimes based on a theme.

Ruby Love, the online-schooled creator of Mojo Hand Zine, shows students that they can get involved with self expression through writing, even while chained to high school English classes.

“I bought a printing press this summer and made a joke about doing a zine on it,” Love said. “Things just went from there.”

Seniors Kainen Spooner, Alden Slote and Jon Fitzgerald write regularly for the zine.

“We’ve had a lot of these ideas in our group where we get a big lofty goal like, ‘Let’s make a zine,’ ‘Let’s start a record label,’ ‘Let’s start a band,’ and it all tends to just not happen,” Spooner said. “I was a little bit hesitant, but … very supportive.”

“It was a mild surprise when it actually worked out,” Fitzgerald agreed. “It’s pretty cool that we can get this out and make a physical something of our efforts.”

Love writes, illustrates and assembles the submissions to create Mojo Hand Zine, which is published every two months. Mojo Hand Zine is currently being sold for a couple dollars depending on the size of the zine at Astro Kitty, Hobbs, and Love Garden, as well as online.

“Ruby, who doesn’t go to public school, has a lot more time on her hands to really put something together like [a zine],” Slote said.

Especially with the pressures of school, having a creative outlet is crucial for many contributors of the zine.

“[Teens] don’t really have an opportunity to get published or express themselves in a public way that is a little more respected than Facebook,” Love said.

“I think [self expression] is totally important,” Slote said. “People don’t get as much self expression as they should, especially in public school which…crush[es] you into a statistic.”

Being able to write for the zine is not only an intellectual outlet, but also a way to sort out unspoken thoughts.

“Under an alias I write poetry for the Zine,” Spooner said. “I write poetry when I feel like it. Sometimes it kills time, sometimes I see something and I really like the image, … sometimes I write [poetry] because there is no other way to deal with it.”

“I can write whatever I want [for the zine],” Fitzgerald said. “But so far [I write] album suggestions. [I] think harder about what I’m listening to. It’s like, okay, these are the things I’m liking right now but why do I like them?”

Love’s goal was that zine contributors would be able to be a part of something while having their voices heard through their writing. According to Mojo Hand writers, Love’s goal has been reached.

“It’s nice to be part of a group of some sort…I’m glad to help out … and contribute to something cool that a bunch of kids are basically doing independently,” Spooner said. “It’s just another form of expression. I enjoy [writing for the zine], so it’s kind of important to me.”

“I think I get to express myself but I think I also do it for fun,” Slote said. “I think [writing] is pretty fun. Throw in your ideas out there for everyone to read and get some feedback.”

Love is happy with the outcome, since Mojo Hand Zine has gotten a fair amount of publicity with the two issues.

“I tried not to have any particular expectations,” Love said. “I just did it because I thought it’d be fun. It’s exciting, definitely encouraging, and I really think I’ll keep doing it.”

“The main thing is really enjoying yourself and not taking on too much [in] the beginning…want[ing] to publish a novel right off the bat,” Love said. “That’s a lot of work. I remember our first issue, we planned it to be 50 pages.”

As Love continues to organize the zine and add people who are interested in writing to the list of writers, teenagers will continue to have their voices heard and words read.

“It’s fun,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s a way to show responsibility even if it’s the tiniest responsibility. It’s a way as a group to get our thoughts together and straightened out and published.”

If Passion Pit and Asher Roth hooked up, the product would be that of “I Like It Like That.” The fuzzy synth and giant choruses are reminiscent of stellar SoCal weather and wild nights with friends.

Sarah Rohrschneider:

10 AM Automatic- The Black Keys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK446tjll2Q

The rock gods would be proud with this ear-pleasing concoction of grimy blues and driving force brought to you by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, rockers extraordinaire. Perfect driving music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLetyIPrbEc

This is what most people would refer to as “struttin” music; funky, fresh and smooth. Earth, Wind, and Fire are soul legends, putting out groovy gems guaranteed to make anyone feel like one kool kat.

Hannah Moran:

Only If For A Night- Florence and The Machine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkJK2KVFsi0

It’s impossible for Florence Welch to make a bad song. This atmospheric, choir-tinged epic introduces chamber rock with heartfelt, powerful vocals and reverb-drenced beats.

Kyle Freese:

Heart of the City- Jay-Z

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re0zFRfRXu0

It’s the man himself– or superman. Jay-Z’s albums are the blueprint for success and “Heart of the City” contains all of the Jay-Z characteristics: swagger, god-like lyrical flow and infectious samples.

Dante Colombo:

Earl- Earl Sweatshirt

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US8uBSCtQKg

This Odd Future prodigy somehow finds a way to make vulgarity cool. The bass in the song is enough to scare your neighbors and the lyrics add an even more intense style. Still, the verses presented are lyrically clever, despite the down-right obscenity.

Sam Boatright:

Cults – Oh My God

Brooklyn indie-duo Cults blends sparkly, glamorous and bouncy beates with fuzzed-out guitars and glittery bells to create a fantastic

hipster-version of The Supremes. What more could one ask for?

Sarah Whipple:

What the Water Gave Me- Florence and The Machine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6I4KvITlPE

What the water gave Florence and the Machine will wash back over listeners with mysterious, haunting echoes carrying goosebumps–the good kind–in its wake. It’s impossible to predict where Florence Welch’s voice will fly next.

Amani Safadi:

Someone Like You- Adele

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njwvIPJlPN0

For those who don’t listen to the radio on the way to school, “Someone Like You” stars Adele’s rich, emotional vocals against a piano that seems to have its own heartache to sing about. It’s the kind of song that people hum in the hallways because it’s always in someone’s head.

Ryan Loecker:

Marvin’s Room – Drake

The subtle but steady beat keeps a slow pace for a melody that only hints at rap, instead adopting a tone that lurks in regretful solitude. But fair warning: the lyrics aren’t for the faint of heart.

Emma Machell:

From My Own True Love (Lost at Sea)- The Decemberists

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DnzjKeXYTI

Like a storybook set to a tune, this song loses listeners at sea while they think over the poetry gently swooping through their ears. If that doesn’t warrant a visit to iTunes, then the curiosity of the Portland-based group’s mix of indie, folk and rock certainly does.

Natalie Hiebert:

Banana Pancakes- Jack Johnson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC-KeoegcHg

This song is almost as charming as its name. Cheer-you-up lyrics bounce along Johnson’s ever-impressive instrumentals, and the melody shares a piece of his sunny Hawaiian home.

Megan Engleman:

Sunshine- Atmosphere

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvY38j7JdCk

For those of you who are into rap, “Sunshine” is probably already on your iPod. For the rest of you, check it out. Miles from stereotypical, this song really is about summer sunshine–old bikes, barbecues, “bumpin” birds and all.

Katie Guyot:

Konstantine- Something Corporate

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMwI1DlZpyY

If there’s any song worth over nine minutes of contemplation, it’s Something Corporate’s mournful yet hopeful string of apologies and memories, tied to a story that links the whole nine minutes 36 seconds into a single entity.

Jon McClees, Conrad Birdie
Q: You’re the lead in the musical, right?
A: One of the leads.
Q: So what’s that like? Playing a lead?
A: I’ve played it before. Not the character, but I’ve played a lead before. My sophomore year I played the lead in Pippin, and it’s definitely interesting, but it’s a lot of hard work.
Q: How much work have you put in, time-wise?
A: Every day after school from 3:15 to 5:30, and then this Sunday we worked from 12 to 5:30.
Q: That’s a lot. Do you feel like you’re ready?
A: Yeah. I’m just [fiddling with a safety pin on his sparkly gold costume] having some trouble with my pants right now.
Q: Tell me about this outfit. It’s very bright.
A: Yes. My character is supposed to be a parody on Elvis Presley, and Elvis wore a—not quite a similar one—but he wore a gold suit, so they’re kind of just pointing it out and making it really satirical toward Elvis.
Q: Very cool. Do you relate at all to your character, or not at all?
A: I can see where he’s coming from with the, uh, trying to have fun and stuff. But he tends to go after girls all the time, and I’m not necessarily that kind of person.
Q: So what do you like most about being in the musical?
A: It’s really fun, the people are nice, and I like hanging out with them a lot.
Q: Do you have a favorite song?
A: A Lot of Living to Do. It’s really jazzy and cool.
Q: It sounds cool. Why do you think people should come see the musical?
A: Because it’s really cool! We’ve put a lot of hard work into it, and I think it’s worth the money, and you should definitely support the school.
Senior Sarah Atkinson, Mae Peterson
Q: What part do you play?
A: I play Mae Peterson. I am Albert’s mother.
Q: What’s she like?
A: She’s pretty crazy. She’s kind of racist—not a super big fan of foreign people. Really hates Rose because she is Spanish. I really love my son, though; he is the sunshine of my existence. And my husband died in a beer truck accident, so I’m probably just drunk all the time, which is probably why I’m racist.
Q: Do you relate to her at all?
A (laughing): Not really—‘cause I’m not a mom, I like to think I’m not racist, and I don’t really have anything against Spanish people. They’re cool.
Q: Is it difficult for you to play this part?
A: Not really. I mean, usually I kinda get the crazy parts like this. I think it’s funny how in the last play I played Cachola, and now I hate Spanish people. Kind of ironic.
Q: The last production wasn’t a musical, but do you sing in this one?
A: I do not. The only song I sing is in one last kiss, but nothing solo, just with the chorus. You know, I just get lots of lines in the songs.
Q: Do you have a favorite song?
A: I really love the guys’ song in The Telephone Hour—specifically David Glauner, because it’s frickin’ adorable. [She performs a quick impression of Glauner.]
Q: What’s your favorite line from your part?
A: My favorite line is—well, this is part of one of the sentences—but it’s, “And my son is running around in saloons, looking for a Mexicali Rose who came for the fruit-picking season and stayed to ruin an American woman’s life.”
Q: Excellent. Thank you very much. So why, other than that line, should people come to see this production?
A: Because, as Jon said, we put a lot of work into it, you know, so it would be a shame for no one to see it. And it’s hilarious. It’s cute, it’s good for the whole family—and you’ll see me.
Junior Raul Cody, Chorus and Shriner
Q: What part do you play?
A: I’m in the Chorus. I get to call myself Flippy Trick Guy because I’m the guy who does all the flippy tricks.
Q: How often do you appear to do these flippy tricks?
A: I’m in both acts. In the chorus, you’re in every scene. I’m a teenager, and then there’s a special part where I’m a Shriner, too, which is a really old man with the best hats and all of that, the secret clubs. I don’t know if you know what a Shriner is, but basically I get to rape somebody, so it’s okay.
[pause]
Q: Okay. All right. So, if you could be any other character, which would you pick?
A: I’d have to pick—I’d probably be Kim, because I’d get to be emotional all the time. And I get to wear a dress. Who doesn’t want to wear a dress?
Q: I have no idea. Costumes aside, what do you like most about the musical?
A: It’s a fun, upbeat musical. There’s not really a down part to it. Sure, I guess you could say there’s “problems” [quotation marks included], but it’s really all the way around upbeat music; fun, dance stuff. There’s a lot of opportunities to just have fun. It’s different—different for me. It’s my first musical that was placed in the ‘50s.
Q: Your first musical in the ‘50s or your first musical?
A: In the ‘50s. The first play I ever did was a musical.
Q: Which one was that?
A: Hair, for Summer Youth Theater—two summers ago? Yeah.
Q: Have you done any others?
A: As far as musicals? No, this is my second one. But as far as plays, I’ve been in Black Boxes, and I was in Main Stage last year. I’m all over the place. It just kind of depends where I pop up.
Q: How do you like singing and dancing at the same time?
A: It’s very hard.
Q: That’s what I’ve heard.
A: It is very hard, but it’s a challenge, and I like challenges.
Q: What’s your favorite song?
A: My favorite song is “You Gotta Be Sincere” because, basically, everyone kind of just faints at the sight of Conrad Birdie and his amazing voice. Everyone just falls out flat onstage, and he’s gyrating his hips. It’s pretty sexy. Have you ever seen Jon McClees gyrate his hips?
Q (laughing): No, but I’m coming to the play.
A: Oh, you’re in for a treat.
Q: On that note, why should people come see the show?
A: Because Jon McClees is amazing–and so are Jevan and Kara Resseguie, and they’re all beautiful people, and I do flippy tricks. And Jon McClees is gyrating his hips. Why wouldn’t you want to come see that?
Seniors Mariam Ali and Akira Cowden, Adult Chorus
Q: What parts do you play?
Mariam Ali: I’m just an adult in the choir.
Akira Cowden: We’re both just adults.
Q: What do you do as adults? How many songs are you in?
M: We’re in about six songs.
A: Yeah, like five or six.
M: And it’s just singing and dancing, and we respond to what other characters are doing.
A: And it’s not too difficult.
Q: Have you been in a musical before?
A: No, never.
M: This is my first one.
Q: So, singing and dancing at the same time: is that new for you?
M: Kind of.
A: We were in encore.
M: But not that intense—it’s different. Because with this you always have to be doing the right move at the right time, and match with the other people, but normally when we sing and dance it’s kind of an individual sort of thing.
Q: If you could be any other character in the production, which would you choose?
A: You can go first, Mariam.
M: Who does Kara play?
A: Kara’s Rose.
M: I’d be Rose.
A: I like Ursula. She’s funny.
Q: What’s your favorite line of theirs?
[pause]
Q: Or favorite song?
A: I like the last song—the one that Jevan and Kara sing together.
M: I really like the telephone song.
A: Yeah, that one’s fun.
Q: And how ready are you to perform them?
M: I feel like I could do it now. We’ve practiced so many times.
A: We’ve practiced a lot.
Q: Why would you say that people should come see this musical?
A: It’s funny, and it’s just fun.
M: And it also has a lot of really good music.
A: It does.
Junior Andrew Pester, Teen Chorus and Shriner
Q: First things first: what part do you play?
A: I am in the Teen Chorus, and I am also a Shriner.
Q: Okay, what does that mean?
A: You’ll just have to find out.
Q: Sounds good. Do you have a favorite song from the performance?
A: We’ll go with Telephone Hour. That’s the one that’s in my head most of the time.
Q: If you could be any other character, what would you pick?
A: That’s a hard one. Let me see … Mr. MacAfee. He’s a good character. I like him.
Q: Do you like playing your part?
A: Yes, I do. It’s fun. A lot of dancing, a lot of singing–that’s why they call it a musical!
Q: Have you ever been in a musical before?
A: No, this is my first one.
Q: So what do you think of it?
A: I really like it, and I think it’s been fun. It’s been time-consuming, but it’s fun.
Q: How long have you been practicing?
A: Probably almost two months.
Q: And how ready are you for the performance?
A: So ready. Especially after these next three practices, we’ll definitely be ready. And it will just keep getting better as we perform.
Q: Why should people come see it?
A: Because it’s really funny. It’s a little crude, but that makes it more funny, I guess, depending on your taste. And there’s a lot of good singing. We really prize our vocals in this.
