Confetti, ripped up paper and sparkles littered the halls, Skittles were ground into the floor, water balloons flew through the air and the student body seemed to wear a collective smile on February 18. Students came together in a way that has rarely been seen before during the filming of the school’s first ever “epic” lip dub video. It took three separate continuous takes and the entire school looked like a kindergartner’s art project gone awry, but students have a video they can be proud of, and that nearly everyone was involved in.

The music video was inspired by Shorewood High School’s backward lib dub and many similar videos found on YouTube.

”It was a really cool, original idea that we decided to make our own by using the pool and the second floor,” film media teacher Scott Smith said. “We would make it a school spirit video by involving clubs, teams and teachers.”

Lawrence High created a lip dub of their own introducing the winter court and filmed it on January 27.

“We had to pick music and then get the lyrics backwards, get singers, plan a route, get the clubs and students involved and organized and practice,” Smith said. “After shooting we have to edit, add music and create any special effects we want.”

All this planning paid off.

“It was a great, great day! What have we done in school that has gotten that many kids involved and excited?” Smith said. “It was like Christmas morning. Everyone is a little tired and worn out afterwards.”

The school was a buzz with talk of the video for several days. Students and teachers were full of excitement and expectation for the video.

“It was a really clever way to get the whole school involved with a single project,” photography teacher Marsha Poholsky said. “I loved that they used music that matched the theme of the year: Earth,Wind & Firbirds. I want to do one every year!”

Each club and individual contributed unique skills and talents to the video. Photo Studio kids threw film and snapped pictures. Newspaper ripped up their most recent issue. People popped balloons and tossed confetti. Rows of lockers were slammed shut. The swim team performed synchronized swimming. Boys ripped up their shirts and an unusual amount of gorillas, raccoons, bananas, and firebirds wandered around. Kids rocked out with guitars and other instruments. Ceramics kids were throwing on the wheel (which looks amazing backwards) and the art kids were painting and dancing. There were even boys playing strip poker in the commons and a trip into the locker room revealed scantily clad boys dancing and singing to the Earth Wind and Fire songs (“September” and “Let’s Groove”) backwards.

One thing that will make the Free State video stand out from the others online is the fact that everyone was involved. All who wanted to be in the video could be in the video, no exclusion and no preference.

“It involved everyone and excluded no one. It was a great idea,” fine arts teacher Laurie McLane-Higginson said, who you might recognize as one of the dancing teachers in elevator scene.

The first epic backwards lip dub music video premiered on February 24 with great applause. Most students thought it was nine and half minutes of awesome but someone at Lawrence High didn’t think so. Within hours of the YouTube debut the video was pranked. About a minute in to the video the screen went fuzzy and a chesty lion appeared. Many people who had not seen the original were tricked into seeing the pranked Lawrence High version and it disturbed some students to the point of retaliation.

Despite Firebird Production’s condemning of any vandalizing of the lip dubs, someone from Free State messed with Lawrence High’s video. They inserted rude comments and malicious content.

Some sort of uneasy truce has come to pass between the two high schools but a new rival has appeared. Apparently students at Shorewoood High School have commented on our video in a negative way even though the video is a tribute to their idea. Then again, there are many many positive comments as well, some from Lawrence High and some from Shorewood.

Free State’s amazing epic backwards lip dub video is finally up and safe from pranksters on fsfreepressonline.com, and YouTube.com. The number of views is steadily rising towards four thousand and the rating is nearly five stars. The first video and its aftermath is sure to be a legendary pursuit in Free State High School’s history.
