Students and teachers prepare for annual talent show

Free State’s third annual talent show will allow students to showcase their various abilities, including anything from singing Korean pop to Native American dance and reciting poetry. The show will be December 2nd, tickets are $2 and can be bought at lunch or at the door.

Talent show director and JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduate) teacher, Danielle Geronymo, believes that performing in the show is a positive experience for students.

“This is the perfect opportunity for kids to do something that they don’t normally do,” Geronymo said. “For some kids it’s a great opportunity to be known.”

Geronymo and the students put hours of work into organizing and coordinating the talent show.

“I’m the director so I have to do the auditions [and] prepare the rehearsal,” Geronymo said. “I have a staff that does the lining, the sound system and the tickets. I have support from students too.”

Senior Ernesto Hodison performed last year so he grew accustomed to performing with experience and confidence.

“If it’s something that you love to do it’s just like think about how much you love to [to do it] and those people are [here] to see your talent and be supportive,” Hodison said. “It’s not like the crowd writes notes about how you messed up on this note. Have fun especially if you love to do it.”

Recommended by the poetry club, freshman Kenzie Dowdell wants to perform his poem so he can practice in front of other people.

“The more I do it the more it’s easier,” Dowell said. “I’m a little nervous. It’s [a poem] about how I’m biracial and I never got to know the black side of my family and it’s about trying to find that balance.”
