Two girls spot each other and exchange vicious looks. This is odd because yesterday they were spotted walking arm-in-arm down the hall, the best of friends.

The problem these two friends are facing is a boy. Not just any boy though, the one they both just ”have to have.” Most people in high school have experienced something similar to this situation at least once. But for this year’s sophomore class it might be even worse. According to the school registrar, Teresa Arevalo, there are 64 more sophomore girls than there are boys. Sophomores have already noticed there are more girls in their classes than there are boys.

”Zero hour there are four boys and fifth hour there are four boys again,” sophomore Josh Ideus says.

”At this point I’ve noticed a substantial difference in the number of boys and girls in each class.  Due to that I believe the boys are a little bit more timid to be rambunctious because there are more females in the class,” says Chemistry teacher Kyle Ellis.

For sophomore Erica Lignell the real problem in having 16% more girls than boys is “girls will definitely be more competitive because there are less guys which will cause drama.” Another concern is they may even have to go down a grade with their dating.

”In choir there’s only 32 guys and 97 girls,” Ideus said.

For the boys though, this presents a nice situation. Andrew Craig and Ideus agree this is an advantage to both of them.

”I think the guys will probably stick together more and I think because there’s more girls they’ll fight more,” Craig says.

Ideus says “maybe the girls will have to go to other grades, but the guys will be free to date within their own grade if they want.”

But what does this mean for future years? The shortage of boys may become more of a problem in the future. Events like Homecoming, Senior Prom, and Winter Formal could be a problem in the next few years. Even more sophomores and juniors could be invited to these events than usual. Another possibility is girls will start skipping events such as these all together because they are dateless.

”I believe the sophomore girls have proven themselves pretty mild-mannered and well reserved, but there again who knows what the future will hold,” Ellis said.
