After school on Oct. 16, debate and forensics trophies predating 2011, excluding 1st place varsity awards and regional, state and NFL awards, were given away to students. Those that were not claimed were thrown away.

On Oct. 16, a debate participant tweeted, “Want a free trophy? Stop by the debate room today after school.” The tweet featured a photo of a cart full of debate and forensics plaques, trophies and various awards predating 2011. After 3:05 p.m.,  debate students could go into the debate room and choose an award from the seemingly unattended pile. The only trophies from before 2011 that weren’t up for grabs were the 1st place varsity awards and the regional, state and NFL awards.

While originally intended for debate students, the trophies found their way into several non-debate students’ hands.

As of Oct. 17, Assistant Principal Lisa Boyd was not aware that the trophies had been given away. She plans to look into the matter this weekend and Monday.

When asked for comment, debate teacher Jason Moore said that nobody cared about a novice debate team winning 3rd place in 1998 and that track teams don’t document every race their runners run. He also said that they kept the important trophies.

“He told me last night that ‘nobody that matters cares [about the other trophies],’” said junior Parker Hopkins, third year debater.
