Government students register to vote

On Nov. 24, Government students were provided with the opportunity to register to vote for the 2016 election. Throughout the semester students have been learning about the government and the different candidates. Government teachers Aimee McLendon and Katy Hayden had the idea of registering the students to vote.

“This is something that the League of Women voters have done before for Free State and they sent out an email,” McLendon said. “It was an idea that [Hayden] and I had talked about earlier in the year but when we got the email from league of women voters we figured that that would probably be the easiest way to do this.”

McLendon hopes the registration will motivate students to vote.

Hopefully, it will establish some life long habits in voting and introduce students to the process of registering,

“Hopefully, it will establish some life long habits in voting and introduce students to the process of registering,” she said.

Senior Brianna Burenheide thought the process was easier than she expected.

“All we had to do was bring a birth certificate and a driver’s license. Those are two easy things to get of yours and you just fill out that information on the [form]. It took like two minutes,” Burenheide said.

Senior Sean Jesse believes it is important for young people to vote, especially in this election.

“I think that a lot of people in our age group think that politics are boring,” Jesse said. “It’s just a bunch of old people talking about issues that don’t affect them but in this next election there are a lot of things that involve us, like student debts stuff like that. It’s kind of like we’re all in this together.”
