Student Council members discuss General Assembly

At the start of the year Student Council began its transition from a classroom setting to a general assembly. Instead of having Student Council meet exclusively during third hour, meetings will be held after school to incorporate more students.

Senior Meghan McClorey says the move is a return to how Free State’s Student Council was once run.

“We used to have general asembly a long time ago,” McClorey said. “We brought it back just to start looking out for other people’s interest.”

I like it because it shows me what other students are thinking, people who have different interests from me that I don’t see every day,

McClorey is looking forward to the change because it will include more students’ perspectives.

“I like it because it shows me what other students are thinking, people who have different interests from me that I don’t see every day,” McClorey said.

Student Council has had two general assembly meetings so far. Although the turnout was less than expected, junior Luke Miller remains hopeful that attendance will go up.

“The first one wasn’t as big as we thought it would be, but hopefully the next one will be a lot bigger,” Miller said. “We came up with events and themes. It was good.”

Miller is looking forward to the switch, but worries that meeting less often will create problems.

“There will be a lot of stuff that you have to do out of the general assembly by yourself at home instead of in the class,” Miller said.

Despite the decrease in allotted time, Miller remains optimistic about general assembly.

“I just really love STUCO class because we can work on everything we have so much time to figure everything out, rather than general assembly where have this finite set of time and we have to get everything done by this date,” Miller said. “I’m excited.”
