Working every Saturday from late August to early November, the set crew of “The Addams Family” creates a backdrop for the fall musical. During the week, the stagecraft classes work on the set. Theatre teacher and director of the Addams Family Bryce Jones oversees both the classes and the workdays.
“In [Stagecraft II], we have some people that are kind of continuing the work on what we get done on Saturdays,” Jones said. “I want it to be clear to the audience that a bunch of students dedicated time and effort to make this happen.”
Head scenic designer senior Kennedy McDonnell said that during the classes, students get assigned a project that they then complete, whereas the Saturday workdays are organized more loosely.
Sophomore Maddy Turner is a part of the set crew who comes in solely on the Saturday work days. As a part of both the crew and the cast, Turner said that it’s nice to see a sneak peak of what the cast will be performing around.
“It definitely gives me a sense of pride, honestly, just getting to know that I helped out with certain parts,” Turner said.

In early January 2026, a group of thespians will travel to Wichita for the annual Kansas Thespian Festival. Each year, three musicals gets chosen from schools around the state to perform at KTF. In the event that the Addams Family is selected, the set will have to be transported to Wichita. Jones said that they have to plan out a set that is easy to deconstruct and transport.
“If we want to go to KTF, then everything needs to be transportable, so everything is on wheels. I think that also matches like the crazy vibe of ‘The Addams Family,’ everything moving around, and it’s gonna make so many more possibilities for blocking too,” Turner said.
