Today, around 10:00 a.m., Free State High School entered a soft lock-in due to a potential threat near campus. Principal Amy McAnarney said Lawrence Police investigated a student report of seeing three individuals across the street, one of which was presumed to be armed with a weapon.
The lock-in restricted students from leaving the building but allowed normal activities and instruction to continue inside. Additionally, students were searched upon entering the building.
Police located the reported three individuals and came across one who had a pellet gun. However, no threats were sent to the school, students or staff.
The soft lock-in lasted for approximately one hour. After the lock-in, an email was sent out by McAnarney to students and families to explain the situation and ensure that parents were accurately informed of the incident.
