Kansas Supreme Court threatens to close schools

This February the Kansas Supreme Court threatened to close down public schools if lawmakers do not change the way they fund them. According to the Huffington Post, the budget is $54 million dollars short and is unequitable for all students.

The Supreme Court decision doesn’t happen until July 1st of 2016. Sophomore Maggie Ziegler, whose mother is a math teacher at Free State, is concerned about this prospect.

It makes me nervous that teachers could lose their jobs. It would hurt families and it would (all) just be bad

“It makes me nervous that teachers could lose their jobs. It would hurt families and it would (all) just be bad,” Ziegler said.

Not only is the loss of teachers an issue, there’s also an issue of students not having a school to go next year Spanish teacher Paul Rosen voices in.

“The biggest concern is for the kids who are gonna be seniors next year because they’ll have the risk either a [shortened] school year or delay in getting the credits that they need for college applications,” he said.

Free State Principle Myron Graber assures that schools will most likely be opened for next year.

“I don’t think anyone really believes that (school will be closed). There [have] been several times in the past that they’ve talked about shutdowns, so I think what we’re talking about is still planning for next year. We’re still going ahead just like normal,” Graber said.
