Tips and tricks on how to widen your fashion horizon

When getting ready for the day, it’s often hard to pick out your “perfect outfit” with the constant struggle of finding what clothes flatter your body type, what colors compliment your skin and how to combine your clothes without looking like a hot mess. Generally, it’s better to go with trends until you want to show off your own style, then what?

Fashion is never easy, especially when you want to try something new. Maybe you have a certain aesthetic or clothing style that you want to fit into, but have no idea where to start. Before you put your ideal outfit together, you need to gather some base clothes that consist of a variety of tops and bottoms that can be worn without excessive styling.

Junior Rowan Glendening, who’s known for having some of the most eye-catching outfits around the school believes “you need to get your fundamental [base] clothing before you start buying statement pieces so you at least have something to wear, once you have everything then you can start putting your outfit together.”

It’s best to have some basic pieces so you’re not struggling to find what to wear. If you go out of your way to find clothes that only work with a specific combination of clothes, you’ll often repeat outfits constantly.

Do you want to be remembered as the person that repeats their outfits all the time?

Another thing you want to look out for is your undertone is, are you warm toned or cool toned? Knowing can help you pick out clothes that’ll make you look more flattering. Different shades of blues, purples, dark greens, pinks and what is known as winter colors look best on people with cooler tones. As for people with warmer skin tones, different types of browns, reds, yellows and lighter greens look best for you.

Once you figure out what colors work best for you, the next step is figuring out how to style it. Combine the clothes in a way where it’ll be pleasing to look at, and with this knowledge, you could reference the color wheel and pick color schemes that are monochromatic, analogous or complementary.

It might take forever to pick a style that best fits you and to find a decent palette of colors that you could always reference to when picking out an outfit, but knowing the basics about what makes you look flattering can make the journey of creating your style much easier.
