Live from the Black Box, it’s Free State Live, which allows students to showcase their creativity through making their own comedic sketches, as well as assisting with building the set.
Theatre Director Bryce Jones said they use Saturday Night Live as a jumping-off point of learning.
“We use it as an opportunity to talk about comedy methods as well and how to write a sketch with comedic intent,” Jones said. “I’m here to make sure they have resources, and I give them a schedule, but beyond that, it’s very much their event.”
The ones taking the stage are his Acting III students who write and act in the sketches. Senior Harper York said that this is her second year participating in FS Live. She said the production is very inclusive and it allows many students to showcase different skills.
Following the similarity to SNL, a teacher is picked each year to host the show. This December, the school librarian, Marisa Hegeman, was selected by the students. Hegeman said she is delighted that she was selected from a wide variety of faculty.
“I’ve always secretly wanted to host. I’m nervous, but I was really excited when they asked me,” Hegeman said.
To better prepare for FS Live, students are given class time to put the production together. York said FS Live interests her because students are permitted to work on whatever medium they choose to help with in the show.
“Every student has a role, and they can choose to write, film, act or produce a show themselves. I really wanted to be able to show off my work for other students and the community,” York said.
Overall, Jones said that FS Live can be an excellent option for those who would like to pursue theatre production.
“[FS Live is]designed for students who want to act, direct and build sets and props,” Jones said. “It is an opportunity for them to creatively explore their passion for acting and being a technician in theater.”
