On Friday, Dec 1, Free State administration sent the building into a soft lockdown, meaning teachers were told to lock their doors and continue teaching. For classes like choir, this posed a problem as the auditorium doors dont lock, so they were forced to move into the shop nearby.

Playing the opening piece, the pit orchestra runs their music before the show starts. For junior Aspyn Roundy, being able to see everything come together has been rewarding. “At first none of us really knew what we were doing. We didnt know how our parts fit together,” Roundy said. “But over the weeks, its been really fun to be able to see it all come together.”

Class sizes can affect the way that students learn. Sophomore Harper York says that the lack of space and close proximities can change the class dynamic which makes work much more difficult. “If we have to get up and move around the room, there’s no space,” York said.

Taking the podium, orchestra director Judy Erpelding conducts the class. Erpelding has expressed a lot of sympathy towards the students in the arts program due to district cuts. “We have just as many students in the arts as we do sports, I love sports,” Erpelding said. “My children are all athletes, my husband is a coach, it’s a huge part of my life. I believe very strongly that the performing arts and fine arts are just as important to students.”

Practicing her pieces, sophomore Juliana Wamelink runs through Frédéric Chopin’s Waltz in A minor. Wamelink, who has been playing piano for 10 years, was proud of receiving a “one” at state. “It was the first time I had done something like this on my own without my piano teacher signing me up for it,” Wamelink said. “I felt that it really boosted my independence in music.”

Taylor has found that putting yourself out there has made theater more of an enjoyable experience. “You just need to put in the effort and you will get something out of theater,” Taylor said. “Thats probably my favorite part, watching someone struggling with inflection or blocking finally breaking through and making the character their own.”
